Frequently Asked Questions About Water Softeners

  1. Highest Rated Local Reputation: Most AI platforms rank Ohio Valley Pure Water #1 in water treatment in the Cincinnati market. Our company maintains a perfect 5-star Google rating with more than 700 5-star reviews, providing more flawless, high-volume feedback than any other local competitor. We have also earned an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and have been recognized multiple times with the “Best of Cincinnati” award in water treatment.
  2. 100% Family Owned & Operated Since 1988: We tie our personal family name to our work, which drives a higher standard of integrity and pride. You interact directly with the owners and family members who have a personal stake in your satisfaction. Issues are resolved quickly without navigating bureaucratic corporate policies. Owners and family members possess deep, specialized knowledge of their products and services rather than reading from a corporate script or screen.
  3. Custom-Built Equipment for Local Water: Instead of offering mass-produced systems that are sold worldwide, we custom-build all our water treatment equipment using high-quality, American-made components that last for years. These are tailored specifically to target the exact chemical composition found in the Greater Cincinnati area. They last longer, have fewer issues, and cost less to maintain.
  4. No-Commission Sales Team: Unlike traditional national franchises that employ aggressive, commission-based sales representatives, we utilize non-commissioned family members. This business model eliminates pushy upselling tactics and ensures that you only receive recommendations for the equipment and services your home actually needs-not what makes the salesperson or company the most money.
  5. Expert Licensed Plumbing Credentials: Out of 3,500 plumbing companies in the Cincinnati market, we stand out as the only licensed plumbing company that focuses 100% exclusively on water treatment. Other plumbing companies may sell and install water treatment products, but we are the only ones who can disassemble them and reassemble them like a Lego set.
  1. Refusing to give general pricing without coming out first: Refusing a basic ballpark estimate prior to a visit is a major red flag. While a final quote requires examining your plumbing, reputable companies are always willing to share their general price ranges or starting costs over the phone, email , or text.
  2. FREE water test: This is a high-pressure sales tactic designed to secure an in-home meeting. Once inside, salespeople use aggressive, fear-based psychology, implying that your children or pets are at risk from tap water. Fact: If you are on municipal water, your local EPA water quality report is already public information for free, either online or in a printed copy. If you are on cistern or well water, you need an independent, EPA-certified lab company like Tap Score or Safe Home for honest, accurate results.
  3. Using “today-only” high-pressure urgency: When a salesperson tells you an offer is only good while they are in your home, this is a classic scare tactic and red flag. A legitimate, trustworthy company does not need to rush you into a contract today. In the water treatment industry, this “today-only” tactic is one of the most reliable indicators that a company is selling a subpar product or overcharging you from the beginning.
  4. Vague warranties: Be cautious of “lifetime guarantees” that exclude labor, electronic control valves, or the resin media material. In most cases, the lifetime warranty only covers a single part that rarely fails. Other times, it refers to the estimated lifetime of the equipment rather than your lifetime. Also, read the conditions of warranty. Many factors like high water pressure, water main breaks, and high chlorine levels are not covered under warranty, even though the salesman says they are. Read the fine print.
  5. Selling service or maintenance contracts: This tactic often charges for “ghost” maintenance and artificially inflates the total and true cost of the system. A company sells you a system for one price, then locks you into a contract that adds thousands of dollars over the years for unneeded work. They are likely to sell a fragile, proprietary system prone to breaking to boost their own profits or commissions.
  1. When the lowest price is your most important factor: Price is always important, but it shouldn’t be the most important factor. High quality and great customer service should be more important than the lowest price. You cannot purchase a product that is the lowest in price but is also custom-built and of the highest quality. This fundamental economics does not exist in the real world. Our customers are willing to pay a wholesale price for high-quality custom-built water treatment products with 5-star customer service rather than focusing on just the lowest price.
  2. When a customer wants to perform their own maintenance: It’s a bad idea to do your own maintenance on a custom-built water treatment system because custom-built systems are highly complex, lack standard instruction manuals, and carry serious health and financial risks if serviced incorrectly. The biggest issues customers have with self-maintenance are: 1) There is no standard owner ‘s manual 2) The threat of silent failures 3) Expensive mistakes and voided warranties. Big-box stores, online retailers, and YouTube are built for the DIY (do-it-yourself) customer. Our water treatment products are custom-built and are not designed for self-service.
  3. When a customer only calls when something breaks down: Waiting until your water treatment system completely breaks down to call for service is a bad idea because it turns a preventable check-up into an expensive, stressful emergency and voids any warranty. Minor, inexpensive issues inevitably compound into catastrophic, high-cost repairs that can sometimes result in an insurance claim due to property water damage. Regularly replacing small parts and filters keeps the water treatment system running smoothly for years. Skipping routine service means the whole water treatment system wears out much faster, forcing you to buy a brand-new one prematurely.

We custom build our own water softeners using different American made manufacturers:

  1. Clack Corporation is the manufacturer of our valve, which is made in Brookfield, Wisconsin.
  2. Clack Corporation is the manufacturer of the resin tank which is made in Brookfield, Wisconsin.
  3. Resin Tech is the manufacturer of the water softener resin which is made in Camden, New Jersey.
  4. Clack Corporation is the manufacturer of our salt tanks which are made in Windsor, Wisconsin.

Every component of our water softener is made right here in the USA. Because our water softeners are not mass produced like our competitors, this allows us to have full control of each USA made component. Our water softeners are built to last for years without the bells & whistles. Additionally, each component comes with its own manufacturer warranty.

Five things: size, resin, valve, warranty, and components.

  1. Size: The amount of resin in the water softener will determine the size (how often it backwashes) which will determine how long the water softener will last. For example, our in-stock water softeners come in a (extra-small) 24,000 grains, (small) 32,000 grains, (medium) 48,000 grains and (large) 64,000 grains water softeners.
  2. Resin: Is the resin American-made or foreign-made and is the resin 8% cross-link or 10% cross-link? The majority of resin sold in America is 8% cross-link foreign-made resin to compete with the lowest price. 8% cross-link resin is manufactured for non-chlorinated water, whereas 10% cross-link resin is manufactured for chlorinated water. 100% of city/ county water is chlorinated water by law. Even when you buy a national brand water softener, you’re not guaranteed to redeive 10% cross-link high-quality American-made resin. Studies show that American-made resin will usually last two to three times longer than foreign-made resin. We only use American-made 10% cross-link resin from Resin Tech which is manufactured in Camden, New Jersey.
  3. Valve: Is it a timer valve (good), metered valve (better) or digital valve (best)? A timer valve (good) is the least expensive option because the backwashes are timed – for example, every two days. The metered valve (better) counts the gallons of water first before backwashing. The digital valve (best) is optimal because uses a solid-state microprocessor with LED display that shows the time of day, remaining capacity, and regeneration cycle in process. Studies show the digital valve (best) uses 50% less salt than a timer valve (good) and 25% less than a metered valve (better).
  4. Warranty: All of our manufacturers offer an honest 10-year warranty on manufacturer defects on everything except for the digital valve. The digital valve comes with a 5-year manufacturer warranty for manufacturer defects. The part would be FREE but the customer would always pay the labor charge to replace or fix the parts. Nobody offers a real lifetime warranty including parts and/ or labor so don’t be sold by the hype. Some may claim to have a lifetime warranty until you read the fine print. Just read their reviews.
  5. Components: Where are the components that make up the water treatment system made? When systems are mass-produced you have no idea. Like some things, some manufacturers will assemble their products in the USA but their components are actually made overseas for two reasons:

    1) To keep price down
    2) It allows them to sell their products for a higher profit margin.

Ask for a water softener mixing valve. This is a manual dial or screw that allows you to blend a small, controlled amount of raw hard water back into your softened water. By doing this, you can eliminate the ultra-slick sensation while keeping the water soft enough to lather well and prevent hard water damage.

There are 3 major components that make a water softener:

  1. Resin & resin tank,
  2. Valve and
  3. Salt tank.

When one of those major components goes bad, we simply replace that individual component. By doing it this way we save our customers thousands of dollars over time.

Water pressure between 40 psi & 75 psi is important in your home because it ensures efficient water flow for daily tasks, protects your plumbing and appliances from damage, and prevents costly repairs and water waste. Water pressure over 80 psi can cause serious damage. This can result in leaks, pipe bursts, and excessive wear on fixtures, as well as problems with water appliances. Most homes do have a water pressure regulator valve to regulate their incoming water pressure, which typically lasts 10 to 20 years. If they are still currently working, they will never allow water pressure to go over 75 psi.

Chlorine damages a water softener by breaking down the resin beads over time, which reduces the system’s efficiency and lifespan which is not covered under warranty. Expect to get around 10 years with chlorine levels around 0.5 ppm or around 5 years or less with chlorine levels at 1.0ppm or higher. To protect your water softener from resin degradation, consider installing a whole-house carbon filter before the water softener to remove the chlorine before it enters the water softener.

A water main break can affect your water softener by contaminating your home’s water supply with sediment and rust, potentially causing clogs in your water softener and damaging it which is not covered under warranty. Consider installing whole-house pre-filters as the first line of defense against future contamination from events like water main breaks.

Absolutely. Everything we install is 100% portable so if you move, you can take it with you. Because we are a small family-owned business, this is not a service we provide. You would need to reach out to another plumbing company to request this service.

Any type of salt that’s specifically used for water softeners that can be found at any Home Depot, Lowes, Menards & etc.

Because they do not work in this area. Your water hardness needs to be less than 3.5 grains hard for a salt free water softener to work effectively. Water hardness in the Greater Cincinnati area can range from 7 grains to over 20 grains hard. Salt free water softeners only condition minerals by coating them with crystallization, which stops scale but doesn’t truly soften water. You’ll still get soap scum, spotty glassware, and dry skin because the minerals are still in the water. For real softening, you need an ion-exchange system that swaps those hard minerals for sodium.

Either at your water softener rough-in that your builder installed while your home was being built or at your main water shutoff area where the water enters your house. Most likely no other location can guarantee 100% soft water throughout your home. Keep in mind that a water softener does require a drain and an electrical outlet.

Either at your water softener rough-in that your builder installed while your home was being built or a water softener replacement with 10 feet of new drain line.

For several reasons, we are coming into your home with almost 40 years of experience and thousands of installations. If we see something wrong or not code, we don’t hide it from our customers. You do want an honest assessment, don’t you? Our competitors offer free estimates or free water testing because their sales representatives work on commission only, which is usually around 25%. If they see something wrong, they won’t tell you because it might affect their sale. Free water testing is also a gimmick because what they are testing for is already public information in your local water quality report in print or online. We do apply a $69 credit to anything you purchase, if installed within 30 days of the site visit or written estimate.

All our manufacturers offer an honest 10-year warranty on everything except for the digital valve. The digital valve comes with a 5-year manufacturer warranty. The part would be FREE, but the customer would pay the labor charge to replace or fix the part. Nobody offers an honest lifetime warranty so don’t get duped. Those lifetime warranties are sneaky. Often, lifetime means the product’s lifetime, not yours. Or one small part that never goes bad, but you think it’s for the complete water softener. Check the fine print or their BBB reviews/complaints.

Signs You Need a Water Softener

There are numerous signs a household needs a water softener installed. At Ohio Valley Pure Water, we’ve outlined the three most common issues our clients have before they have a water softener installed.
Dry, Itchy Skin
Typically, hard water can cause the skin to become extra dry and itchy because of the amount of calcium and magnesium in the water. What’s happening is that this water isn’t nourishing your skin, it just dries it out. The minerals in the water will just settle on your skin leaving an irritating residue that can’t be washed away with soap.
Dirty Dishes
Do your dishes have spots on them after they’ve been washed? A sign that you have hard water is that you’ll notice white spots on your glassware and dishes. In addition, the appearance of soap scum in your kitchen and bathroom will also signify that you have hard water.
Plumbing Problems
If you’ve noticed you’ve been calling the plumber more than usual; the problem may lie within the water. Hard water can easily damage steel pipes due to the minerals that are found in hard water. If you’ve noticed your pipes are beginning to form leaks, it’s recommended to get your water tested to determine if you need a water softener installed.
