Frequently Asked Questions About Whole House Filters

What is a whole house water filter?

A whole house filter connects to the main water line entering the home – every faucet, toilet, shower, bath, kitchen, and laundry connection – dispenses filtered water.

What types of whole house filters are there?

A whole house filter connects to the main water line entering your house so that all of the water in your house - faucets, toilets, showers, baths, kitchen, laundry - dispense filtered water. Typically the whole house water filter is connected to the main water line and before a water softener. NOTE: Whole house filters do not remove water hardness; only water softeners remove water hardness. NOTE: Whole house filters to not remove cancer causing contaminants, pharmaceutical drugs or infectious microorganisms; only a reverse osmosis system can remove them.

What are the most common whole house filters?

A two stage pre-filter and carbon block filter. The pre-filter removes dirt, silt, rust and debris. The carbon block filter reduces many contaminants and eliminates chlorine, lead and odors and smells. Under normal water use 2.5x20 filters last between 6 months to a year depending on your water quality and water use.

Are whole house filters and water softeners the same?

No – water softeners remove hardness minerals and use salt whereas whole house water filters remove a broader range of contaminants.

Do customers ever own a water softener and a whole house filter?

Absolutely! Most people like to do more than soften their water when they see the benefits of doing so. People think water softeners remove everything from water, which is wrong. Water softeners only remove water hardness whereas the whole house filtration systems remove a broader list of contaminants. Both systems together give you soft, clean filtered water (not purified water) and water that is odor free throughout the home and not just soft water only.

Who is your manufacturer?

Pentek, which is owned by Pentair, is the manufacturer of our filter housings which are made in Brookfield, Wisconsin.

What are the conditions of the manufacturer warranty?

Benefits of Whole House Water Filters

There are many benefits to having a water purification system installed, here are just a few:

Extends the Life of Water-Using Appliances

With the installation of a whole house water filter, any water-using appliances will last much longer. The minerals in water can build up over time and cause issues with your plumbing system. With filtered water flowing through the pipes, the lifespan of your plumbing system will grow as the filter works to remove minerals and lime scale caused by hard water.

Healthier Showers and Baths

With the chlorine and chloramines that have been removed or significantly reduced, your shower and baths will become healthier. Chlorine that's in your bath or shower's water supply can cause painful headaches, dizziness, and reddened eyes, and is a known carcinogen. When chlorinated water is heated, it can also reduce harmful gases that can be dangerous to your health.

Fewer Deposits on Clothes and Less Soap Scum

Unclean and unfiltered tap water will leave deposits on clothes, causing them to smell and can lead to rashes and/or allergies. In addition, unfiltered water can cause major soap scum buildup on your clothes, bathroom, dishes, and more. With a water purification system, you’ll experience less soap scum and better-smelling clothes.
